Start without any lights on in darkness

Put on the key light first as it will show the main shadows and highlights and acts as your source of light (window, light or sun etc.)

Place the key light from 15-45 degrees to the side and 15-45 degrees  above the camera

Put on the fill light, this softens the key light and makes more of your actor visable

Put on the backlight (aka rimlight)
