COMPANY LOGOS

I googled film idents and managed to collect a cross section of logos. What I noticed was that they were in general quite simple in design, with not much more then three colours. The 'summit', 'e one' and 'sky' logos use only blue and white, with the 'e one' having the writing in the logo and the 'summit' writing being under the logo. The 'sky' logo is a bit more dynamic with the writing looking 3D. The 'indiecan' logo was also very similar, with a logo then writing underneath. However, there were some that had more of a picute, with the 'columbia' and 'icon' ident having an image. It was acceptable to have an image but it tended to be of one object, or a just as a background like the 'warner bros' ident. It was quite clear the design needed to be eyecatching and easy to process, as it may feature quite small on a poster or just appear for a few seconds at the beginning of the film. A good example of a logo that could feature at the beginning of a short film is the two below. The BFI logo is eyecatching with three colours and easy to see circles that the letters are in. Even though the letters are the same colour as the circle the gradient to white makes the letters stand out very effectively. The red background in the film four logo is striking makes the white even more noticable, it is dramatic which means it will be seen and digested easily.
MY LOGO
This is the logo/ident I designed on paint after doing research into company logos. I knew that the logo needed to encapsulate what our company was trying to do and say. In chosing the logo I also had to pay attention to the name, liminal is a place of transition, on the threshold, just as coming of age movies show the transition between childhood and adulthood, not sure where you fit in. As our company is producing a coming of age movie I though it would be appropriate. The ident/logo of our company also had to reflect this. I stuck with three main colours, black, white and blue. I wanted the third colour to really stand out against the white and the black, I thought red would we too dramatic and have connotation of warning or danger, especially when put in the diamond shape. We thought pink was too feminine and had only positive connotations, while green was a reminder of nature which wasn't what we wanted anyway. Blue seemed like the perfect colour, with the bright shade being a reminder of the sky, of clean, fresh air and a happy colour. However, at the same time it brought with it connotations of sadness and I liked this dual meaning. The shaped in the logo also acted as a metaphor, the blue diamond represents the liminal state that sits between the black and the white, which could mean many things (life and death, light and dark, purity and corruption). I chose to put the blue in a diamond as the diagonal lines of the shape contrast with the vertical line between the light and the dark which is what stands out. The diamond doesn't seem to fit in and belong, in the same way a teenager doesn't belong as a child or an adult.
