SHORT FILM POSTER

Here are a selection of posters that came up when I typed 'short film poster' into google and this selection came up. I could easily look at these thirty posters and analyse what they have in common. Firstly, even when the images are quite small the titles of the short films are really clear and easily readable. They also mostly seem to have one very simple image. 'The Landing', 'Cargo' and 'White Elephant' both use siloutte images, which is very effective as it is clear what it is. 'Voice Over', 'The Well' and 'Connected' utilise the same sort of thing with a basic colour and cartoon like outlining. 'A Short Film About Love' and 'The Blue Umbrella' use more drawn cartoon styles. Most of the posters used one image, with only 'Side Effects' and 'Etki' using more than one. A great deal of them have the film festival prize certificates on the posters as well, many with multiple awards. Almost all of them had titles in capital letters, with 'alma' and 'drowned. at birth' having just lower case letters. There were also very few that mixed capital and lower case, but 'Collector' and 'White Elephant did'.

One of the posters that really caught my eyes was the poster for 'In The Pines'. The first thing that struck me was that it used six different images. Which made it really striking. I thought we could potentially do something like this, having one of the sections covering each of the five days our film is spread across. This would give a very good cross section of what our film is about.

The poster for 'Roxy' is a good example of the minimalist type of poster. It still has the awards at the top and the big clear font of the title. It does create a large amount of enigma as it doesnt give much away. The grey pastel colours are very smooth and aesthetically calming, bringing connotations of rainy overcast days or sadness. It is an empty colour in the same way that the poster is empty, setting up expectations of the film, even with such a simple poster.

This is an example of an amateur short film poster, created by a young group of people. This poster gave me a few ideas of what I could do. Manipulating the image like they have here in the middle could look very effective, or blurring it in places to give a sense of disorientation. It also reminded me that we could use a more interesting font, possibly designing our own to make sure it was as suited as it could be.

Even though this poster is for a completely wrong genre I liked the idea of the similar image reflected. It acts as if it is the two sides of a person and sets up ideas about what the film could be about. Is it the same person? It raises a great deal of questions. The top figure is blue and this gives a cold slightly sinister impression, especially by the fact the girl on the top has more power because of her position. In our short film the girl makes a transition from more innocent through to wild and partying continuing on to a breakdown. We could potentially have our poster being inspired by this one, with the first innocent girl on the bottom and the breakdown or party one on the top. By having the innocent one on the bottom it gives it less power and shows that this side of the girl was weak and easily corrupted.
